Anna Soubry Welcomes Government Decision to Drop Raise to Prison Discounts

Anna has welcomed news that the Government is to drop its plans to raise Labour’s mandatory discount for a guilty plea to fifty per cent.

Anna said: “I spoke out against the idea in last months debate in Parliament and in a number of media interviews. My argument is that our judges should decide on what, if any, discount an offender should receive if they plead guilty. The last Government tied Judges hands with a one third discount. Some defendants don’t deserve any discount- however early their plea; whereas others should get a substantial reduction in their prison term if the judge believes it’s the right thing to do. I fully support Ken Clarke who is an excellent Lord Chancellor and I am pleased that he seems to have come round to giving judges the discretion.”
