Anna Soubry urges local champions to put their names forward as Nottinghamshire’s first elected Police Commissioner

Anna Soubry, is urging local champions to put their names forward as Nottinghamshire’s first elected Police Commissioner.

The MP said, “The election will be held in November and I believe it’s important that people from a non party political background come forward for selection. We need to consider candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds and in particular, look for someone with the ability and record to take up this important position”.

The introduction of Police Commissioners has been controversial. “I was not convinced they would work in Shire authorities like Notts”, said Anna, “but having listened to the debate in Parliament I was persuaded they are a better alternative to Police Authorities. Nottinghamshire Police needs to improve its performance, people want their faith in our Police restored and Police morale needs improving. An elected Police Commissioner could achieve that and I hope a strong local champion will step forward”.

Anna added, “Labour opposed elected Chief Commissioners, but it’s former Labour MPs who are queuing up to stand”. Former Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Prescott, and former MP for Sherwood, Paddy Tipping, have put their names forward as potential Labour candidates.
