Anna Soubry MP, Member of Parliament for Broxtowe, has today urged the ruling group at Broxtowe Borough Council to work together with both the Conservative group and the people of Toton and Stapleford, to deliver HS2 for the benefit of the local community.
In correspondence with all three party leaders Anna said:
“I understand that you are all determined to ensure an agreed approach as to how Toton Sidings can be developed and on the future of the Green Belt land to the north of Toton and west of Stapleford Lane.
I am very pleased that Broxtowe Borough Council has welcomed Mondays announcement, to create a station/hub at Toton Sidings as part of the HS2 line to Leeds, and I think it is important for all three political parties to work together to make the most of this great opportunity.
As you know the second phase of HS2 will not be completed until 2037 and I hope you will agree that it is very important that we give careful consideration as to how we take advantage of a station/ hub at Toton Sidings without sacrificing the principles of Green Belt land in preventing coalescence and in providing green open spaces. I think it is critical we see this as an opportunity to create jobs in the Borough and to build better public transport (notably the extension of the tram to the Sidings area or at least some effective and modern connection) and better roads for the benefit of both Stapleford and Toton and all users of the A52. Any provision of housing should be minimal and in any event part of a carefully considered plan which will take time to prepare.
As the MP I would particularly urge you to involve the communities of both Toton and Stapleford from the outset. As you know this land is very important to the people who enjoy it and value it. There is considerable opposition to the Peverill development and a real determination to preserve particularly popular areas.
I hope your discussions result in agreement and that we, which includes the people of Toton and Stapleford, can all work together to make the very most of this great opportunity.”
