Anna Soubry MP pays tribute to Cllr Marilyn Hegyi

It is with great sadness that I have learnt today that Borough Councillor, and my good friend, Marilyn Hegyi has died after a short illness. Marilyn was diagnosed with cancer some months ago but only the other week she sent me a very positive text saying that her health had greatly improved. Sadly, it was not to be and she passed away peacefully yesterday.

Mal, as many of us called her, came to Toton many years ago, bringing up her daughters locally. Mal was an active member of her community, serving as a Governor at Toton Bispham Drive Junior School and as a Borough Councillor.

Marilyn was first elected to Broxtowe Borough Council in 2009, to represent Toton and Chilwell Meadows. She was a life long Conservative and campaigned many years ago with Broxtowe’s former MP, Jim Lestor. I first met Mal shortly after my selection as Conservative Parliamentary Candidate in 2006 – she had been out of local political life for some time but didn’t take much persuading to get back involved!

Most importantly, Marilyn was committed to her community in Toton. Not one for blowing her own trumpet, she worked quietly and effectively. Mal worked tirelessly to get Toton officially recognised by Royal Mail and it was a pleasure to work with her on this successful campaign. We will miss Mal greatly and my thoughts are with her daughters Fran and Melanie, as well as everyone who knew and loved her.

As ever,
